SAUSAGE sandwich in one hand and a Herald autograph book in the other, Newcastle's red and blue army packed out EnergyAustralia Stadium yesterday for The Hunter's Biggest Barbecue.

Fans lined up as early as 3.45am to get up close and personal with the Newcastle Knights and to collect their signatures in autograph books published free in The Herald.

About 4000 children, mums, dads and grandparents attended the barbecue, sponsored by The Herald, 2HD and the Knights.

Fans agreed the day's highlight was watching the Knights train.

Fifty lucky children got the chance to take to the field with the Knights for a coaching clinic and 10 children tried their hands at cheerleading.

Other activities included face painting, a fashion parade and interviews with Danny Buderus, Jarrod Mullen and Michael Hagan.

Knights media manager Stephen Crowe said the day allowed fans to see their favourite players in action away from the hustle of matches and gave the players a chance to say thank you to their loyal supporters.
